What does fighting fraud mean to you?

It’s International Fraud Awareness Week. Many of you have signed up as supporters, and some of you have also submitted great events on the Fraud Week site. Fraud Week is the perfect time to go a step further in your role as an anti-fraud professional to start discussions among peers, coworkers, executives and stakeholders in your community about how important fraud prevention is to society as a whole.

Our members are on the front lines in the fight against fraud, so recently, we asked them, “What does fighting fraud mean to you?”

Here’s what they had to say.

To me, fraud fighting means showing others how to steer clear of unethical lapses, not just catching them after they've committed them; it means professionally gathering all the facts, and not irresponsibly jumping to conclusions; and it means serving society, and not just yourself.

- John Rotondi, CFE, CPA
Head of Surveillance, MUFG Bank

To me, in the financial sector, fighting fraud means protecting our customers from the multitude of ways that they can be taken advantage of … We are the first and greatest defense against fraud for our customers.

- Michele McRoy, CFE
Security Officer, Bank of Tennessee

Fighting fraud is a marathon where fraudsters lead the race at the beginning but fraud fighters must lead the race at the end.

- Randriantseheno Herisoa, CFE
Auditor, STATCAP PROJECT

Fraud fighting — at least in the region I work most (Southeast Asia) — is about improving lives. The human suffering caused by fraud, and corruption in particular, further deepens inequality, robs people of basic rights and services, and enables gross human rights violations and environmental degradation to occur and go unpunished. Organizations, both public and private, who take fraud-fighting seriously empower their employees and stakeholders and can tangibly improve whole communities.

It is using communication and education to create awareness; developing prevention and detection tools to enhance controls; performing investigations and obtaining restitution to reinforce the message that the ethical path is the best path.
